Speak to Anyone vs Duolingo

Duolingo is a gamified app with short lessons across a very large number of courses. Speak to Anyone teaches the language of a trip and plans the trip in the same app. Here is how they compare on what we could check.

Checked against Duolingo's own pages on 24 October 2026. Features and prices change, so compare the current ones on Duolingo's site (opens in a new tab) and in the app.

Where Duolingo is strong

  • Scale. Duolingo says it has over 280 courses teaching more than 40 languages, counted across all learners.
  • Explain My Answer is free for all learners, announced on 1 January 2026.
  • Content through B2 for nine languages (Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English), announced in April 2026.

Where Speak to Anyone fits better

  • Built around a trip: the same app plans the days, saves the videos that gave you ideas and takes your phrases offline.
  • No energy or heart system to run down while you learn.
  • Cebuano, Hiligaynon and Tagalog guides, which we did not find on Duolingo's pages for English speakers.

Side by side

Speak to Anyone and Duolingo, feature by feature.

  • Free version

Speak to Anyone14 days free with no limit on how much you learn in a day, then a monthly or yearly plan.

DuolingoFree learners use energy: mistakes cost energy, which refills in about a day or by watching a rewarded ad or spending gems (Duolingo blog, 3 July 2025).

  • Speaking

Speak to AnyoneSay a phrase aloud and see what the speech check heard. It never gives a pronunciation score.

DuolingoSpeaking exercises repeat words, translate sentences aloud and run short dialogues. A live AI Video Call and Roleplay are on the Max plan (Duolingo blog, 9 February 2026).

  • Languages

Speak to Anyone12 languages in 14 courses: Italian, Spanish (Spain and Mexico), French, German, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), Dutch, Polish, Romanian, Hindi, Tagalog, Cebuano and Hiligaynon.

DuolingoOver 280 courses in more than 40 languages for all learners (Duolingo language report, 1 December 2025). We did not find Tagalog, Cebuano or Hiligaynon courses for English speakers on the pages we could check.

  • Levels

Speak to AnyoneAn estimated CEFR level from A1 upwards, worked out from what you have done. It is an estimate, not a certificate.

DuolingoDuolingo describes content through B2 for nine languages and maps CEFR levels to Duolingo Scores (Duolingo blog, 22 April 2026).

  • Trips

Speak to AnyoneTrip planner with days, stops, a map, saved TikTok, Instagram and YouTube links, share links and a cover you can post.

DuolingoWe found no trip-planning, saved-places or travel-map feature on Duolingo's own pages.

  • AI

Speak to AnyoneNo generative AI. Every answer is marked by rules written for each language.

DuolingoDuolingo Max uses AI features such as Video Call and Roleplay; Explain My Answer is now free.

We only list what we could confirm from Duolingo's own pages. If something here is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
