  • 1,867 phrases to search, hear and save
  • 10 games
The first-steps map of the Italian course: a painted place with each lesson as a stop on the road.

First Steps covers hello, please, thank you, how much, where is the station, and asking someone to say it again. Then the missions take you into the places most visitors end up: the bar counter, a restaurant, a train, a hotel desk and a pharmacy.

What you will be able to do

Real situations, one at a time.

20 missions, each in three stages: Get by, Go further and Like a local. A mission counts as achieved when you know the key language, understand it spoken, say it aloud and handle the conversation.

Missions

  • Order at an Italian bar

From your first espresso to an evening aperitivo: you can order exactly what you want at an Italian bar, understand the barista at full speed and pay the right way, in Italian.

  • Eat out at an Italian restaurant

From 'a table for two' to 'compliments to the chef': you can order a full meal, shape it to your needs, understand the waiter at normal speed and handle the bill, politely and in Italian.

  • Book a table by phone

You can book a table over the phone in Italian, no face, no gestures, no menu to point at, and understand every detail the restaurant tells you.

  • Meeting new people

Get through the first conversation with someone new, and leave with a plan to meet again.

  • Make small talk with a stranger

You can chat with a stranger, on a train, at a café table, in a queue, about where you're from, what you do and what to see, and keep the conversation going.

  • Aperitivo with new friends

You can spend an evening at aperitivo with Italian friends: order, chat about what you like, cope with fast banter, make plans for the weekend and split the bill.

  • A first date

Enjoy a first date in Italian: warm conversation, a well-judged compliment, a plan to meet again, or a graceful goodbye.

  • Run a photo shoot in Italian

You can run a short shoot in Italian: greet your subject, explain the plan, direct poses and movement, fix the light, and wrap up with a delivery promise.

And 12 more, from dinner at a friend's home to seeing a doctor.

First phrases

Italian you can use on day one.

These are from the first lessons. In the app each has audio, a note on when to use it, and a way to save it.

  • Buongiorno!

    Good morning!

  • Mi dispiace.

    I'm sorry.

  • Quanto costa?

    How much is it?

  • Parla inglese?

    Do you speak English?

  • Può ripetere, per favore?

    Could you repeat that, please?

  • Posso avere il conto?

    Can I have the bill?

  • Vorrei una camera singola.

    I'd like a single room.

  • Non capisco.

    I don't understand.

Good to know

Three things about Italian for a traveller.

Tu and Lei

Italian has an informal "you" (tu) and a formal one (Lei). The course shows which one fits a bar, a hotel desk or a friend's dinner table.

The bar has its own rules

Coffee at the counter works differently from coffee at a table. The first mission goes through it, from asking for a caffè to paying.

Italy sounds different from region to region

Notes on regional speech sit beside the lessons, covering Italy's regions and Ticino in Switzerland. Each is marked as a habit of that place and not a rule for the whole country.

Where you will use it

Places the course has notes on.

Each note is a habit of that place, so you know what to expect where you are going.

  • Italy

  • Switzerland

    Ticino and southern Graubünden

  • San Marino

  • Vatican City

  • Malta

Widely understood, alongside Maltese and English

More than the lessons

The same app plans the trip you are learning Italian for.

Takes your phrases offline

Download the travel guide on Wi-Fi. The phrasebook, survival and travel packs, local notes and audio then work with no signal.

Plans the trip too

Put places on days, save the TikToks and reels that gave you ideas, see the stops on a map and share the plan.

Keeps your travel map

Colour in the countries you have been to and the ones you want to go to.

Questions

About learning Italian.

Can I learn enough Italian for a holiday before I go?

The first modules are written for that. Greetings, ordering, directions and asking someone to repeat themselves come in First Steps. How quickly you get through depends on how often you practise, and the lessons are short enough for a few minutes a day.

Is it only travel Italian?

It starts with travel and carries on. There are ten tracks, including social life, dating, shopping, work and occasions such as weddings, so the course is still useful after the trip.

Does the course teach how Italians really speak?

Lessons open with a conversation between two people, and the missions include what the barista or the waiter says back to you. The speaking check tells you what it heard and never gives a pronunciation score.
