A travel guide with First Steps and an Out and about track, and four missions: an evening on a terrace, taking a train and a bus, buying fruit, vegetables and cheese at a market stall, and getting help at a pharmacy.

What you will be able to do

Real situations, one at a time.

4 missions, each a situation you will meet on a trip. You practise the key language, then the conversation.

Missions

  • An evening on a terrace

Get a table on a terrace, order a meal and a drink, ask for the bill, answer Separat sau împreună?

  • Take a train and a bus

Buy a train ticket, handle a sold-out train and a change of track, and follow directions from the station to the bus stop or the centre.

  • Buy fruit, vegetables and cheese at a market stall

Buy tomatoes and cheese at a market stall, taste before you buy, name your amounts, answer the seller's questions and pay in cash.

  • Get help at a pharmacy

Describe a small health problem to a pharmacist, mention an allergy, understand the dose, and ask where the police are about a lost passport.

Good to know

Three things about Romanian for a traveller.

Dumneavoastră

Romanian has a polite "you" (dumneavoastră) for strangers and older people. The guide shows when to use it and how to answer.

A Latin language

Romanian is a Romance language, so Italian, Spanish and French speakers will recognise many words.

Moldavia is a region of Romania

The guide's notes make clear that Moldavia, in Romania's north-east, is a historic region of Romania and is not the Republic of Moldova.

Where you will use it

Places the course has notes on.

Each note is a habit of that place, so you know what to expect where you are going.

  • Bucharest

The capital: the old town, the metro, big boulevards and the Palace of the Parliament

  • Cluj-Napoca & the north-west

Cluj-Napoca and the north-west of Transylvania: a lively university city. Hungarian is also spoken by a minority

  • Brașov & the Carpathians

Brașov, Bran and Râșnov, with the Southern Carpathians close by

  • Sibiu

Sibiu, its medieval centre and the Transylvanian Saxon villages nearby. German-speaking heritage

  • Maramureș

Baia Mare, Sighetu Marmației and the wooden churches of Maramureș: villages where English is rare

  • Iași & Moldavia

Iași, the old university city, and Moldavia, the historic region of Romania's north-east (not the Republic of Moldova)

  • Constanța & the Black Sea coast

Constanța, Mamaia and the Black Sea resorts: busy in summer, quiet outside it

  • Danube Delta

Tulcea and the Danube Delta: boats, birds and small villages

  • Elsewhere in Romania

Timișoara, Oradea, Sighișoara, Craiova and everywhere else

More than the lessons

The same app plans the trip you are learning Romanian for.

Takes your phrases offline

Download the travel guide on Wi-Fi. The phrasebook, survival and travel packs, local notes and audio then work with no signal.

Plans the trip too

Put places on days, save the TikToks and reels that gave you ideas, see the stops on a map and share the plan.

Keeps your travel map

Colour in the countries you have been to and the ones you want to go to.

Questions

About learning Romanian.

Will people speak English?

In Bucharest and tourist places often, in villages and small towns less so. The notes say which places to expect it in, and the phrases cover the rest.

Does it cover Transylvania?

Yes. There are notes for Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Sibiu and the Maramureș villages, with the Hungarian and German heritage of the region.

Is the course available offline?

Download the guide on Wi-Fi and the phrasebook, packs, notes and audio work with no signal.
